Classic Digital Gold Open UK's First "Digital Street"
Sunday 19th March 2006 - Today Tony Blackburn and Tony Christie visited Ashleigh Drive, Sheffield for the opening of the UK’s first ever Digital Street. Tony Blackburn broadcasted his Classic Gold Digital show live from the street party held for all the residents of Ashleigh Drive.
Ashleigh Drive’s Alison Broadhead recently won a nationwide competition to make her street the UK’s first Digital Street by winning a DAB digital radio for all her neighbours, and a giant street party with DJ host Tony Blackburn. The competition, organised by Classic Gold Digital, also includes a luxury holiday for two to the Gold Coast, Australia.
“This has been a fantastic day for us – being able to bring the radio show directly to the street of our real fans,” said Classic Gold Digital DJ Tony Blackburn. “It’s a great way of demonstrating how enjoyable digital radio can be for all your friends and family.”
“It’s been a privilege to be here to help launch the UK’s first digital street,” added Tony Christie: “I can highly recommend the digital experience to the rest of Britain!”
Classic Gold Digital ran the competition and organised the street party to raise awareness of the amount of people now able to tune into their favourite classic hits and famous DJs all over the country. With its ease of use and great sound quality, DAB digital radio is fast becoming a preferred way to listen to music and information previously not available.
The popularity of digital radio is high with over half a million DAB radios sold in December last year, and the total number of digital radio sets in the UK now totalling 2.7 million. The trend is set to continue with a staggering 86 per cent of the population now able to listen to DAB digital radio stations.
