CPB Awards Grants to 85 US Public Radio Stations for Transition to Digital Service August 24, 2006 – The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) has announced $7.74 million in grant awards designed to help 85 US public radio stations in 28 states, including 49 stations serving rural and minority audiences, purchase the equipment needed to transition to digital radio.
In addition to offering superior sound, digital broadcast technology allows public radio stations to significantly expand the scope and quality of their program services beyond that which is currently available. The grants announced today are the latest in a series of awards designed to assist public radio and television stations with their transition from analog to digital broadcast technology. "Public radio must be equipped to participate fully in the digital revolution," said CPB President and CEO Patricia Harrison. "Building on support from Congress, state governments and local communities across the nation, these critical grants will help ensure the success of public radio's digital transition and new and better radio broadcast service for the communities these stations are connected to."
